What waterfall rappelling is
You walk backward down the face of a waterfall on a rope, controlling your own speed, with the water pouring around you.
It sounds extreme. It isn't, when it's done right. You wear a harness and helmet, a rappel device controls the rope, and a second guide holds a backup line from below the whole time. Most of our guests have never rappelled before, and almost all of them want to go again.
Kauai is one of the best places on earth to do it: a wet volcanic island cut by streams, with cliffs and plunge pools hidden in the jungle.
How a private trip works
- Tell us about your group. Who's coming, your experience, and what you're hoping for.
- We design the day. Which waterfalls, how many rappels, how long and how wild.
- Ground school. Gear fitting, a safety briefing and practice on a training wall until you're comfortable.
- The falls. A jungle hike in, then your rappels, coached from the top and backed up from below.
- Photos and the hike out. Your guide shoots photos along the way.

Is waterfall rappelling safe?
The risk is in the details, so we control every one of them:
- Redundant anchors, inspected before every trip.
- A backup belay from below on every descent, so a slip simply stops.
- Releasable rigging that lets the guide lower you smoothly if you freeze or tangle.
- Weather and stream checks before and during the trip. Light rain is fine; flash-flood risk is not, and we reschedule.
- A guide with wilderness first aid, rope rescue training and 14+ years on these walls.
Led by Renan Gobbet Hernandez: more than 15,000 guests on rope with zero insurance claims.

Waterfall rappelling questions
Do I need any experience?
No. Most guests have never rappelled. Ground school and a practice wall come first, and we don't head to the falls until you're comfortable.
Is it scary?
The first step over the edge is the hardest part. After that most people relax and start enjoying it. Your guide coaches you the whole way, with a backup from below.
How tall are the waterfalls?
It depends on the trip. Beginner days usually start on a short, gentle drop, and more experienced groups can go bigger. We plan it with you.
Can kids do it?
Often, yes. Tell us their ages when you request a trip and we'll plan a day that fits. [Minimum age]
What if it rains?
Rain is part of the jungle and usually fine. If there's any flash-flood risk we move the date, no questions asked.
Can I bring my phone?
Yes, in a dry bag. Your guide takes photos too.
How is this different from a regular tour?
It's private. No fixed schedule, no strangers in your group, and the day is built around what you want: one perfect rappel, a full day of falls, or real canyoneering skills.
